  1. I have an ongoing project that has a grease duct section that runs approximately 100 feet horizontally; the duct then is engineered to connect to an in-line listed grease exhaust fan that then after approximately 6 feet enters a vertical portion that extends approximately 50 ft. to the outlet above the building roof line. The installation being submitted for installation with an AMMR but I am having concerns about the large portion that would be under positive pressure on the downstream side of an in-line fan. This installation has other concerns but I would appreciate any opinions other inspectors have on this installation.

    1. Mark,
I would have concerns as well. Most inline fans are designed to be installed right before the termination. I have seen instructions that say it is a “recommendation” to have short as possible run after the the inline fan. I am also concerned about the 100 ft. run of horizontal. Are they graded at 1″ per foot? Is it exposed with clean outs? Will the grease cool down and solidify before reaching the fan? Are they trying to use the section where the grease duct shall slope back to the fan or an approved grease reservoir?. What is an approved reservoir for this type of system. Is it the 2.5 gallon required grease collector at the fan. There is a system that is approved in LA, but you you will not find any other type of listing. LA requires an integral water wash system with it.

  2. Section 510.1.3 is very clear that the slope and the design of the duct system shall be so no grease collects in the duct. I have many concerns about the system you are proposing. Because of the length of your horizontal section, does your duct slope 1” per foot back to the hood? Can you post the listing of the in-line fan and motor? You have a rise of 50’, is your duct installed in a 2-hour fire rated enclosure? How are you going to install the fan and motor in a fire rated enclosure? Are you going to install fire rated doors to access, remove and repair the fan and motor? How are you going to provide access to the duct for cleaning? How will the fan and motor be accessed for cleaning?

Common grease duct problems are improper clearance to combustibles, leaking welds, no access panels, wrong access panels, fans not hinged, no grease containment for the fan, power cords too short, wrong fans. A poor installation or design will cost the consumer’s money and may cause loss or damage to people and property. Remember we are here to protect.

    1. second page of LA approval… I need to write the webmaster to see if BIC can allow multiple images on post. I hope some of this hits some of what you need to know. Most likely is will just open up more question.
